Swedes of Pope County - 1868 Immigrants

In 1868, 12 people from our group left Ljusnarsberg.

In 1868, 12 people from our group left Ljusnarsberg.

Caroline Ersdotter
The first person listed in the records for 1868 is Caroline Ersdotter, part of an entire family (almost) that came from Ljusnarsberg to Pope County. The father, Erik Andersson died in Ljusnarsberg on 21 Sep 1867, a couple of months after his death, his son, Erik, had left for America. In 1868, two more children left Ljusnarsberg for America, Caroline being the first to appear in the moving out register. Her moving out certificate was No. 31 issued on 18 Apr 1868. I have been unable to find a record of her passage. She married John Felt in 1869, who came from Ljusnarsberg in Mar 1869. I have not been able to find a record for this marriage, but his obituary states that they were married in Chicago before moving to Ishpeming, Michigan. They were living in Ishpeming when their daughter was born on 27 Dec 1869. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming show that they left for Minnesota on 3 Jun 1878.

Fredrik Ersson/Fred Chalenburg
Caroline's brother, Fred, appears next in the moving out record. His certificate number was No. 38, issued 2 May 1868. I have been unable to find a record of his passage, nor do I find him in Ishpeming, Michigan. The first record that has been found for him in America is his marriage to Emma Thompson on 24 Nov 1871 in Pope County, Minnesota. Emma was from Norway.

Jan Erik Karlsson/John Eric Dime
John was the brother of Anna Kathrina Karlsdotter who later became the wife of John J. Berg. His moving out certificate was No. 48 issued on 9 May 1868. He married Johanna Johnson on 15 Nov 1873 in Ishpeming, Michigan. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming do not say when or where they removed to. They did not settle in Pope County. Instead they went to Swede Grove Township in Meeker County, Minnesota and are found there on the Minnesota census in Jun 1885.

Gustaf Johnson
Gustaf Johnson had moving out certificate No. 49 issued on 9 May 1868. He sailed on the S.S. Belgian along with serveral other people from Ljusnarsberg Parish. The ship sailed in Jun 1868 from Liverpool to Quebec. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming, Michigan shows that he joined the church on 27 May 1875. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Pope County, Minnesota show that he joined the church in 1879. He is found on the 1880 census in Pope County, Minnesota as a single man living with his sister and brother-in-law Sofia and Erik Runquist.

Sara Sofia Jansdotter
Next in the moving out records is Gustaf Johnson's sister, Sara Sofia Jansdotter. Her moving out certificate was No. 50 issued on 9 May 1868. She sailed with her brother and others on the S.S. Belgian that sailed in Jun 1868 from Liverpool to Quebec. She married Erik Runquist on 21 Jan 1873 in Ishpeming, Michigan and was accepted into the church there on 19 Dec 1875. The first record for her in Minnesota is the 1880 census where her brother is living with her family as a single man. Her family included her husband Erik and son Erik.

Johan Jansson/John J. Berg
John J. Berg left his mother and brother in Sweden and went to America. His moving out certificate was No. 51 issued on 9 May 1868. He sailed on the S.S. Belgian in Jun 1868 from Liverpool to Quebec. Family tradition says that he traveled down the St. Lawrence Seaway and through the Great Lakes to arrive at Marquette, Michigan. His future wife, Anna Kathrina Carlsdotter, went to America the next year as did his mother, Anna Lisa Jansdotter, and his brother Elias Andersson. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming, Michigan show that his family went to Minnesota in 1876. Family tradition says that he walked from Michigan to Minnesota during the summer of 1875 and chose land. He returned to Michigan and brought the family in the spring of 1876.

Erik Olsson/Erick Lindquist
Erik Olsson had moving out certificate No. 65 issued 16 May 1868. I have been unable to find a record of his passage. Erick's wife and daughter traveled at the same time and are found on the ship list for the S.S. Belgian with other members of the group, but Erick's name does not appear on the passenger list. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Pope County, Minnesota show that they were married on 20 Sep 1868, which would have been shortly after they arrived in Ishpeming. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming, Michigan show that the Lindquist family went to Minnesota 1 Apr 1879.

Lotta Cathrina Fredriksdotter/Charlotta Cathrina Fredriksdotter Lindquist
Charlotta had the next moving out certificate after Erick, No. 66 issued on 16 May 1868. Her daughter, Ida, had the same certificate number. The records show that they were not married and Ida was illegitimae. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Pope County, Minnesota show that they were married 20 Sep 1868, which would have been shortly after they arrived in Ishpeming, Michigan. Charlotta and Ida traveled on the S.S. Belgian along with other people in the group in Jun 1868. Erick is not listed on the passenger list. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming, Michigan shows that the Lindquist family went to Minnesota 1 Apr 1879.

Ida Charlotta Lindquist
Ida had the same moving out certificate as her mother, No. 66 issued 16 May 1868. She was not quite two years old at the time. She and her mother sailed on the S.S. Belgian in Jun 1868 from Liverpool to Quebed along with other members of the group. Her father is not found on the passenger list. The Bethany Lutheran Church records in Ishpeming, Michigan show that the Lindquist family went to Minnesota 1 Apr 1879.
