The Swedes of Pope County - Bethany Cemetery

This includes anyone buried in Bethany Cemetery who was born anywhere in Sweden, not just Ljusnarsberg, although most of them did come from Ljusnarsberg.

The Swedes of Pope County is a project to identify people who were born in Sweden and lived at some time in their lives in Pope County, Minnesota. The project starts with John and Anna Berg who came from Ljusnarsberg Parish, Örebro County, Sweden. The people they lived closest to and worshiped with at Bethany Lutheran Church are the next to be identified. Some of these people are also people that their family has married with and the connections continue outward from there.

In the mid-1860s Sweden suffered a famine and many people left Sweden. In some places in Sweden, the parish paid the transportation costs for the poorest people to leave. I don't know if either of these conditions were factors in the emigration of this group of people, but it is certainly possible.
