Bud Berg's graduation pictureMerlin went by the nickname Bud throughout his lifetime.  When his mother's brother, Percy, came back from WWI, he spent some time with the family.  Merlin was a little tike and followed Percy everywhere he went.  He became known as Uncle Percy's little buddy, later shortened to Bud.

Bud married Doris Irene Chandler on August 15, 1942, in Dothan, Houston County, AL at the Episcopal church.  They met at Ft. Lewis, WA when Bud was stationed there.  Doris lived with the Jessup family in Olympia providing nanny services and also worked in the Office of the Secretary of State for the State of Washington.  Reverand Jessup led the Episcopal congregation in Olympia.  Bud and Doris met at a dance at Ft. Lewis.  Bud bought Doris a soda, and while they sat across from each other in a booth, he spilled the soda on her dress so that she would have to sit and talk to him while it dried.  He proposed to her on his 25th birthday, and left soon after for Camp Rucker, Alabama.  In August, Doris took the bus to Alabama and they were married the day after her arrival.
